FRENCH HORN MOUTHPIECES
Development of the french horn mouthpiece line
Years of making custom french horn mouthpieces for players from around the world has helped determine what players want and need to make a difference in their sound. These features are now available to all players in the form of the Laskey standard product line of french horn mouthpieces. A special thanks to the many professional players from around the country who helped in the development of a concise and exceptional line of french horn mouthpieces consisting of seven rim sizes and four cup sizes.
Our Numbering System
As french horn players seem to use the metric system to describe the size of the mouthpieces, we decided to number our line in a metric way. Our line represents the meteric measurement, but we drop the first number. For instance, if a mouthpiece measures :
17,0mm is our 70 series
17,5mm is our 75 series
18,0mm becomes our 80 series
18,5mm becomes our 85 series
While these numbers are similar to the numbers we use in the trumpet line, there is no relationship to the size or measurement.
A Unique Rim Contour
A unique quality of our standard french horn mouthpiece line is the unique rim contour. There is definition to the inside diameter and yet the roundness of the rim shape allows for easy movement, as well as a high degree of control and flexibility.
We realize that many french horn players feel a personal affinity with a rim that they have played for many years. There is a certain degree of "comfort" in having the same rim on your face. But we believe this rim will not only offer comfort, it will also provide a higher degree of accuracy, flexibility and improved intonation.
Larger shank available
With the increased number of German-made horns, The Laskey Company is
now making many of our horn mouthpieces with J, G and F cups available in
a larger shank. Players using Schmid, Hoyer horns, etc. now have Laskey
mouthpieces made specifically for those instruments.
Because the shank is slightly larger in diameter, it will not go in as far as
the standard shank.
This modification adds more “presence” to the sound, increases
the quality of attack and improves intonation and response.
Mouthpieces made with this larger shank are visually different from the standard
models in two ways:
* A smaller letter “E” follows the model number (ie 775GE)
* There is a pronounced ring cut into the top of the shank
If you are presently playing a horn with a larger receiver (Schmid, Hoyer,
Alexander, etc) you will find the changes we have made to be a significant
French Horn Cups
Our cup selection was determined by what are the most popular sizes being used by players today and what we believe will offer optimum performance. Laskey mouthpieces are available in the following three cup sizes. We have chosen not to offer deeper cups on the shallower mouthpieces as we feel it will not create the proper balance needed. All cup sizes are made with a standard throat size of .182"/("14")/4,62mm.
is slightly more shallow than our G cup. It offers brilliance but with a bit rounder and sweeter sound. A bit more conic shape than our other cups, yet it has all the brilliance and bite a player may want.
is offered in all sizes. In our tests, this cup provided the best mix of tone and color to virtually every player. While slightly more shallow than many cups we have seen players use, it's performance outshined them all.
is a slightly deeper and more funnel cup than the G. It will still have the precision of attack that the G offers, but with a slightly thicker and rounder sound. A cup like the traditional Farkas Model.
is deep yet with a degree of brilliance that is not usually found in a cup this deep. This is not only ideal for 2nd and 4th horns, but also has enough brilliance to be used on some of the higher horn parts.
Laskey french horn rims are listed by the approximate inside diameter metric measurement. If a mouthpiece measures 17,5mm on the ID, the size is the last two digits or 75.
